The 48th weekend of the year is looking like $164 million for the top 12 films Friday-Sunday, well below the normal pace for a normal Thanksgiving weekend.

Opening at 3,742 theaters Wednesday (well above the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Frozen (3D) from Disney should average $12,200 per theater for the weekend (for a $45.5 million opening Friday-Sunday and $66 million for the Wednesday-Sunday period).  [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] Early reviews are quite positive at RottenTomatoes: 87% positive so far. Note: Although critic reviews are not related to the size of the opening weekend, they are significantly correlated with the size of the declines in the opening weeks of a movie. The Domestic Total is a very early ShowBuzzDaily projection of the total North American gross, based on the Weekend Forecasts.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire will remain the #1 film weekend.  Despite a somewhat weak -62% drop in its second weekend, continued strong midweek business should keep the film on pace for $400 million total domestic.
