The 37th weekend of the year is looking like $81 million for the top 12 films, very close to the multi-year average for this weekend.

Opening at around 2,900 theaters Friday (just above the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Insidious Chapter 2 from FilmDistrict and director James Wan should average $11,300 per theater for the weekend (for a $32.5 million opening three-day weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] No early reviews yet at RottenTomatoes. Insidious Chapter 2 should be on track for $67 million domestic, above the $54.0 million domestic total for Insidious (which opened to $13.3 million April 1-3, 2011).

Opening at around 2,800 theaters Friday, The Family from Relativity and writer-director Luc Besson should average $3,800 per theater for the weekend (for a $10.5 million opening three-day weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] No early reviews yet at RottenTomatoes for this film either. The Family should be on track for $27 million domestic.

Opening Weekend Forecast Domestic Total Projection
Insidious Chapter 2 FilmDistrict PG13 n/a 32.5 67
The Family Relativity R n/a 10.5 27
Note: Although critic reviews are not related to the size of the opening weekend, they are significantly correlated with the size of the declines in the opening weeks of a movie. The Domestic Total is a very early ShowBuzzDaily projection of the total North American gross, based on the Weekend Forecasts.

Riddick becomes the top holdover this weekend, and we expect Instructions Not Included to move ahead of The Butler, which is slowing down a bit.
