WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD.  We will continue tracking 2015 for several more weeks as the holiday films finish their runs.  We will begin tracking 2016 in a few weeks.

Studio YTD 2015 as of 2016 Jan 17

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2016 to date after two full weeks is +6% above last year and +8% above the average for this point the past four years ($0.389 billion).  Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed just under $1 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office (that’s -16% behind the comparable worldwide box office last year at this stage, but that should even out next week as overseas tallies catch up).

A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year.  (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)

Box Office YEAR TO DATE
(billions) Weeks 1-2
North America Worldwide
2016 $0.422 $0.964 Jan 4-Jan 17

2013 $0.362 n/a Jan 7-Jan 20
2012 $0.384 n/a Jan 2-Jan 15

The past six weeks in North America are now up +31% from the same period last year (still very strong but a touch lower than the pace the last few weeks: +38% pace last week and +33% pace two weeks ago) and now +33% above the four-year average for the similar six-week period ($1.336 billion).
