WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD.  Here is the updated 2015 Scorecard, with Universal pulling into a very close second place (just behind Warner Brothers) thanks to Fifty Shades of Grey.  This performance from Focus and Universal is the first bit of good news in a long time for the hapless Comcast corporation, as its proposed acquisition of the equally loathed cable operator Time Warner Cable languishes in the Washington regulatory approval process, as the “crown jewel” of NBC News is crushed by incompetent management and now scandal, and as NBC primetime plunges into its normal post-NFL slumber/ coma with no Olympics on the horizon to ride to the rescue.

Note: The chart below had been updated and corrected: Mortdecai and Strange Magic had been assigned to the wrong studios.  Now Disney is in its proper place, dead last behind even Lionsgate/ Summit at this early point of the year.  Thanks to friend of the site Ted “Eagle Eye” Frank for catching the error.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2015 to date is now +10% above last year and a substantial +17% above the average for this point the past four years ($0.991 billion).  Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed almost $3.2 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office (that’s a huge +22% ahead of the comparable worldwide box office last year at this stage).

A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year.  (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)
