WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD.  The release of Neighbors has pushed Universal out of the Paramount and Lionsgate/Summit pack to 5th place among Hollywood studios year to date in worldwide box office (with just under $800 million).  Sony sits at #1 with close to $1.3 billion worldwide in 2014 to date, with Amazing Spider-Man 2 still producing significant overseas revenue.  20th Century Fox and Disney are each around $1 billion worldwide at #2 and #3 (with Rio 2 and The Other Woman still producing overseas for Fox).  Warner Brothers is in the #4 position, stuck at just over $900 million.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2014 is now running 6% ahead of last year and now only 1% above the average for this point the past four years ($3.066 billion).  Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed over $8.3 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office.

A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year.  (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)
