Based on Saturday’s grosses, Weekend #6 of 2013 is looking a little stronger than it did yesterday (now $89 million for the top 12 films versus the $84 million estimate based only on Friday’s results). But this is still over 46% behind the pace for the same weekend the last few years.
Opening at 3,141 theaters Friday, Identity Thief from Universal grossed over $11 million Friday and bumped up to over $15 million Saturday, putting it on track for a $36.6 million opening weekend (far exceeding the $24.2 million ShowbuzzDaily forecast earlier this week). The Melissa McCarthy comedy is averaging $11,600 per theater for the weekend (double the $5,333 average first weekend for all wide-release films the last two years). Critics are not amused: now 24% positive reviews at RottenTomatoes, but edgy R-rated comedy does not live or die on the opinions of critics. (Read Mitch Salem’s review here.) Identity Thief should finish with $112 million total domestic.
Opening at 2,605 theaters, Side Effects from Open Road Films grossed $3.3 million Friday and $5.3 million Saturday, pushing the weekend estimate up to $10.0 million weekend (though still below the $12.2 million ShowbuzzDaily forecast). The film is averaging $3,800 per theater for the weekend, while critical sentiment is a very good 85% positive. Side Effects is headed for $37 million total domestic.
