It’s not much of a surprise at this point that GRAVITY (Warners) continues to run rings around its competition. Based on preliminary numbers at Deadline, the blockbuster will easily win its third consecutive weekend, with $8.8M on Friday, down only 30% from last Friday. That should mean a $30M weekend, and close to $170M in the US by Sunday.
What is a surprise is the soft opening for CARRIE (Screen Gems/Sony/MGM). With a $7M Friday, it may only reach $17M for the weekend, far lower than recent horror hits like Insidious Chapter 2 ($40.3M), Mama ($28.4M) and even the remake of Evil Dead ($25.8M).
There’s even a chance that CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (Sony) will overtake Carrie for second place over the weekend. Captain Phillips is down only 39% Friday-to-Friday, for $5.2M, and could get to $16-17M for the weekend.
The weekend’s other two wide openings were expected to be weak, and didn’t overperform. ESCAPE PLAN (Lionsgate), featuring aging movie warriors Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, had a $3.4M Friday and will probably end the weekend with $8-9M. That’s huge, however, compared to THE FIFTH ESTATE (DreamWorks/Disney), a disaster with just $700K on Friday and a weekend that won’t top $2M.
Tomorrow we’ll have opening day numbers as well for the limited releases of 12 Years A Slave and All is Lost.
