TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (Paramount) held very well on its second day of release, according to preliminary numbers at Deadline and elsewhere. Its Day 2 drop was in the neighborhood of 15%, which is about as well as Guardians of the Galaxy held last week (down 18%). despite the huge advantage Guardians seemed to have in terms of critical response and anticipated word of mouth. Turtles earned $21M on Saturday, which should give it at least $62.5M for the weekend (Paramount will probably claim closer to $65M). It’s the last family-oriented action movie of the summer, which should give it space to play out through August.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Marvel/Disney) was itself no slouch, down less than 50% Saturday-to-Saturday to $16M, and heading for a $40M+ weekend, with a 55% drop that would be the best 2d weekend hold of the year’s action blockbusters.
INTO THE STORM (Warners) dropped around 5% on Saturday to $6.2M, on its way to an OK $17M weekend. THE HUNDRED -FOOT JOURNEY (DreamWorks/Disney), with its older audience, grew by about 25% on its second day to $4.5M, for what should be an $11M weekend. STEP UP: ALL IN (Summit/Lionsgate) fell 25% on Saturday to $2.1M and a tepid $6.5M weekend.
LUCY (Universal) lost 50% from last Saturday to $3.7M and a $9M weekend.
