EARLY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Strong Saturday for “No Good Deed,” “Dolphin Tale 2″” and “The Drop”

NO GOOD DEED (Screen Gems/Sony) held better than expected on its 2d day of release and better than Obsessed did in 2009, and that guarantees the Idris Elba/Taraji P. Henson thriller the weekend win.  Based on preliminary numbers at Deadline, No Good Deed rose by about 15% on Saturday to $10M, compared to the very slight drop that Obsessed had on its opening Saturday. which should give No Good Deed an extremely solid $25M for the weekend.

If No Good Deed had faltered, A DOLPHIN TALE 2 (Alcon/Warners) might have made a race of it, since the family movie received a huge surge from the weekend matinee audience, rising 80% from Friday to $7.7M on Saturday, giving it a likely $17M weekend.THE DROP (Fox Searchlight) also had a strong Saturday, rising substantially from its opening day for a $5M weekend at only 809 theatres.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (Marvel/Disney), now over $300M in the US, and TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (Nickelodeon/Paramount) were once again the top holdovers.
