The Marvel superhero audience likes to get its sleep. Despite the fact that
THE AVENGERS is expected to do record-challenging business this weekend, last night’s midnight screenings totaled $18.7M–a tremendous amount of money, to be sure, the 8th largest midnight opening of all time, but 8th place isn’t where
Avengers mostly expects to be. The number isn’t anywhere near the $43.5M record set by
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and falls below the rest of the accumulated
Potters and
Twilights at the top of the list, not to mention below
The Hunger Games and its $19.7M just a few weeks ago.
Avengers can claim the midnight superhero title, however, reportedly edging out The Dark Knight‘s $18.5M from 4 years ago. And it’s far beyond any previous midnight grosses in the Marvel universe, galloping past the $7.5M mark set by Iron Man 2.
The next question, of course, is opening day. There, too, the final Harry Potter owns the record with $91.1M, while Hunger Games did $67.3M a few weeks ago, The Dark Knight is the chief superhero with $67.2M, and the current Marvel leader is Iron Man 2 with $51.2M.
