The Writers Guild of America, it should quickly be noted, operates under very strict eligibility rules, only allowing awards to go to films produced under WGA or WGA-affiliated contracts.  That disqualified a number of very prominent Oscar contenders this year, including Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Amour and Beasts of the Southern Wild, and left the door open for several less likely titles to score nominations.  Since they are, by and large, a worthy lot, one hopes they’ll enjoy what may be their only moment in the awards spotlight.  That being said, here are the 2012 WGA nominees:

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

FLIGHT – John Gatins

LOOPER – Rian Johnson

THE MASTER – Paul Thomas Anderson

MOONRISE KINGDOM – Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola

ZERO DARK THIRTY – Mark Boal

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

ARGO – Chris Terrio

LIFE OF PI – David Magee

LINCOLN – Tony Kushner

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER – Stephen Chbosky

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK – David O. Russell

BEST DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY

THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE – Sarah Burns, Ken Burns, David McMahon

THE INVISIBLE WAR – Kirby Dick

MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD – Alex Gibney

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN – Malik Bendejelloul

WE ARE LEGION: THE STORY OF THE HACKTIVISTS – Brian Knappenberger

WEST OF MEMPHIS – Amy Berg, Billy McMillin

The WGA awards will be handed out on February 17.
