It wasn’t a great morning for the Weinstein Company, which saw both of its major candidates rejected by the Directors Guild of America in that organization’s nominations, the last to be announced before Thursday morning’s Oscar unveilings. The DGA chose:
Ben Affleck, ARGO
Kathryn Bigelow, ZERO DARK THIRTY
Tom Hooper, LES MISERABLES
Ang Lee, LIFE OF PI
Steven Spielberg, LINCOLN
Affleck, Bigelow and Spielberg were sure things, but this was good news for Les Miserables and especially for Life of Pi, a movie that hasn’t been at the forefront of the awards pack. The surprise exclusions were David O. Russell for SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and Quentin Tarantino for DJANGO UNCHAINED, both Weinstein movies, as well as Michael Haneke for AMOUR, among others. Less surprising exclusions included Paul Thomas Anderson for THE MASTER (another Weinstein Company release) and Benh Zeitlin for BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD.
The only nominations that really count, though, are the ones that are less than 48 hours away.
