CABLE HIGHLIGHTS:  Even on a strictly linear basis, the Season 8 premiere of HBO’s GAME OF THRONES was its biggest premiere ever, up 0.32 from the July 2017 premiere to 5.03.   It wasn’t quite the highest-rated episode of the show, down 0.67 from the Season 7 finale.  However, HBO has been quick to note that viewing patterns have changed in the past 2 years, and that when digital viewing is counted, their math has the premiere as the show’s most-watched ever.  In any case, it was mammoth.  (By way of comparison, while THRONES has sustained and even grown, THE WALKING DEAD has fallen such that its October 2018 premiere was less than half the Sunday THRONES linear number at 2.49–even though AMC is in roughly 3x as many households as HBO.)  Having THRONES as a lead-in did wonders for the rest of the line-up, as BARRY jumped 0.57 to 0.72, LAST WEEK TONIGHT rose 0.16 to 0.44, and VEEP was up two-tenths to 0.35.

The night’s other scripted programming was much lower, but not particularly dented by the arrival of THRONES.  On Showtime, BILLIONS slipped 0.02 to 0.17, and THE CHI was also down 0.02 to 0.11, with ACTION steady at 0.03/116K  On AMC, KILLING EVE lost 0.02 to 0.13 on AMC, and was down 0.03 to 0.07 on BBCAmerica, with A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES down 0.07 to 0.10 on AMC and up a tick to 0.04/171K on BBCAmerica.  On Starz, AMERICAN GODS was steady at 0.08, and NOW APOCALYPSE held at 0.02/80K.  Adult Swim’s late-night LAZOR WULF, out of the THRONES orbit, was at 0.29/0.26 compared to last week’s 0.25/0.20.

Unscripted was led by TNT’s NBA PLAYOFFS games at 1.27/1.04/0.69.  Bravo’s REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA dropped 0.08 to 0.79, with MARRIED TO MEDICINE down 0.03 to 0.32.  Food Network’s BUDDY VS DUFF rose 0.09 to 0.53, and TAKE YOU RICH was at 0.28.  On TLC, SISTER WIVES TELL ALL was at 0.41, up 0.06 from last week’s regular episode, and SEEKING SISTER WIFE TELL ALL was at 0.33, up 0.08 from last week’s show.  Discovery’s NAKED & AFRAID was at 0.38/0.34.  ESPN’s MLB SUNDAY NIGHT game was at 0.32.  Univision’s LIGA match was at 0.29.  NBC Sports Net’s NHL PLAYOFFS games were at 0.27/0.23.  HGTV’s line-up was led by ISLAND LIFE at 0.27/0.25.  ID’s ON THE CASE returned at 0.25, and MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND was at 0.21.  Paramount’s BAR RESCUE ticked down to 0.24.
