Weekend Box Office Predictions 1.22-24.2016

Weekend #4 of 2016 is looking like $118 million for the top 12 films this weekend (see comparisons below).

Dirty Grandpa from Lionsgate should open with $12.0 million Friday-Sunday. The film is on track for around $31 million domestic in its run. Overseas the film could bring in $18 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $49 million.

The Boy from STX should open with $11.0 million Friday-Sunday. The film is on track for around $22 million domestic in its run. Overseas the film could bring in $9 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $31 million.

The 5th Wave from Sony should open with $10.5 million Friday-Sunday. The film is on track for around $23 million domestic in its run. Overseas the film could bring in $30 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $53 million.

For the past four years, the top 12 films this weekend have averaged $106 million total, ranking 39th of 52 weeks. Last year, this weekend’s total was $141 million (while 2014 was $98 million, 2013 was $88 million and 2012 was $98 million). This Friday-Sunday is looking like a decent $118 million, up +11% from the multi-year average for the comparable weekend but down -16% from the same weekend last year.
