WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS February 1-3

The fifth weekend of 2013 should total a bad $70 million for the top 12 films, 30% below the normal pace for this weekend.

Opening in about 2,900 theaters Friday, Warm Bodies from Summit should average $6,900 per theater for the weekend (for a $20.0 million opening weekend).  [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening three-day weekend of $5,300 per theater.]  Only seven critics have posted so far at RottenTomatoes, but all of them have been positive.  Warm Bodies will approach $68 million domestic.

Opening at about 2,400 theaters, Bullet to the Head from Warner Brothers should average a pitiful $2,800 per theater (for a $6.8 million opening weekend).  Bullet to the Head should end up with about $23 million domestic.

All of the holdovers are starting to settle down, with the biggest (Hansel and Gretel) just under $8 million for the weekend.
