Weekend Box Office Predictions FEBRUARY 21-23

Weekend #8 of 2014 is looking like an okay $110 million for the top 12 films, 4% above the average for this weekend the past several years. Two new movies look to open very quietly, while The Lego Movie remains the only real force in theaters currently.

Opening at around 2,500 theaters Friday (slightly below the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Pompeii from Sony/TriStar should average a sub-par $4,300 per theater for the weekend (for a weak $10.8 million opening weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an three-day opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] No reviews at RottenTomatoes yet. Pompeii is on track for around $27 million domestic.

Opening at a similar 2,500 theaters Friday, 3 Days to Kill from Relativity should average a similar $4,100 per theater for the weekend (for a $10.2 million opening weekend). No reviews yet for this film either. 3 Days to Kill is on track for around $20 million domestic.
