Reviews have been coming in progressively worse for Cars 2, dropping from 50% positive at RottenTomatoes to 37% as of Friday morning. In line with this trend is Mitch Salem’s review of the film. The words “lazy” and “phoning it in” seem to summarize what reviewers think, and that does not bode well for the long-term box office prospects for the film.
We are not going to adjust the opening weekend forecast ($67 million), which is usually immune to less than stellar reviews. However, the long-term gross prospects will take a hit as weekend declines should be sharper than expected. We originally pegged the ShowBuzzDaily Domestic Gross estimate at $185 million, but we are going to take that number down to $175 million. Parenthetically, this is not very good news for Team Metcalf in the Summer Movie Draft, which will be updated later today when the Thursday box office numbers are in. Cars 2 was an important component in Metcalf’s comeback strategy in the closely watched game.
