WORLD CUP SKEDBALL: Day 12

Ratings for the simultaneous double-headers on ESPN and ESPN2 Monday have been added to the chart below.  Some real clunkers, including the Spain vs Australia match at 11:30 am on ESPN2, now the lowest-rated match of 2014.

World Cup to Date:  the best comparisons currently are the June 12-23 ESPN Average to Date for 2014 (all but three days of the Group Stage round) and the June 11-25 ESPN average for Group Stage matches in 2010.  Both of those averages (bolded in the table below) contain two USA matches, as the third USA match in 2014 is yet to be played (coming Thursday) and two USA matches aired on ESPN in 2010 while the other aired on ABC.  Comparing those two similar sets of games, 2014 is 75% ahead of 2010 in terms of the total audience (persons aged 2+).  Further, 2014 is 62% ahead with adults 18-49, 52% ahead with the key sports sales demographic of men 18-49 and 47% ahead with the premium sales demographic of men 18-34.  The increases in the sales demographics over 2010 are truly impressive but the even larger increases with the broader total viewer measure show that the appeal of World Cup soccer in the United States is hitting all groups: younger, older, male and female.
