Ratings for Wednesday’s matches on ESPN and ESPN2 have arrived and the two on ESPN2 are the lowest-rated matches of 2014 so far (ranking #43 and #44), while the 3:30 pm telecast on ESPN (Ecuador and France in a fascinating 0-0 draw) was halfway respectable, ranking at #27. Of course, the big numbers will be in tomorrow (Friday) for the USA loss to Germany, which was really a win because they didn’t lose by more than 2 goals.
Ratings for ABC’s Sunday’s matches were very solid (the 2:30 pm Sunday telecast ranking #4 out of 40 matches televised to date and the 11:30 am telecast at #11). ABC matches now narrowly out-rate ESPN’s with total viewers ages 2+ (3.95 million for ABC to 3.51 million for ESPN), with adults 18-49 (1.56 ABC rating to 1.47 ESPN rating) and with men 18-49 (2.13 ABC rating to 2.10 ESPN rating), but ESPN still has a significant edge for World Cup coverage with its core base of men 18-34 (2.19 ESPN rating to 1.96 ABC rating with men 18-34).
World Cup to Date: 2014 is now 65% ahead of 2010 in terms of the total audience (persons aged 2+). Further, 2014 is 51% ahead with adults 18-49, 43% ahead with the key sports sales demographic of men 18-49 and 39% ahead with the premium sales demographic of men 18-34. The 2014 average we are looking at is the June 12-25 ESPN Average to Date for 2014 (all but the final day of the Group Stage round) and the June 11-25 ESPN average for Group Stage matches in 2010 (both averages bolded in the table below).
