The burnished Jackie Robinson bio 42 (Warners) continued its winning ways on Saturday, according to preliminary numbers at Deadline, with a solid 22% bump to $11.1M and what should be a $27M weekend. That’s very strong for a sports movie, and with good word of mouth and an audience that skews old, it should run nicely for the next 2-3 weeks. SCARY MOVIE 5 (Dimension/Weinstein) had a much smaller $400K bump on Saturday to $5.9M, although frankly the fact that there was any bump at all comes as a surprise given how terrible it is. If that number holds, it could top $15M for the weekend, still by far the worst result ever for the franchise.
Holdovers performed on Saturday in accordance with their Friday results. EVIL DEAD (TriStar/Sony/FilmDistrict) will be down around 65% to $9M, with JURASSIC PARK 3D (Universal) down about 55% to $8-9M. GI JOE: RETALIATION (Paramount/MGM) is down about 50% to $10.5M. THE CROODS (DreamWorks Animation/20th) and OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (FilmDistrict) are declining more softly, down 30-35% to $13M and $7M, respectively. OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL (Disney) is down about 45% to $4.5M.
After expanding to 514 theatres, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (Focus/Universal) should have a weekend in the neighborhood of $3.8M, an OK $7500 per-theatre average. (In comparison, 42 has a $9K average at 3003 theatres.)
