Deadline is reporting that Saturday’s boxoffice for
THE HUNGER GAMES is heading for $50M. This is obviously a very preliminary figure–some late night west coast shows haven’t even started yet, much less been reported back to the studio. But if the number holds, it would mean that
Hunger Games is an even more phenomenal hit than it had already seemed to be. A $50M Saturday would be the 2d highest of all time, behind only
Spider-Man 3‘s $51.3M, and would mean that
Hunger Games declined only about 27% from its massive Friday gross, better than
The Dark Knight, either part of
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and all the
Twilights managed to do.
With $118.3M already earned for Friday/Saturday, the reported numbers would also virtually guarantee a $150M opening weekend for Hunger Games, which would be one of the top 4 openings ever. In addition, it would demonstrate superb word of mouth, which would put Hunger Games in position for strong holds in the weeks to come.
But these are, as noted, unofficial figures for now. Stay with SHOWBUZZDAILY all weekend for updated boxoffice and analysis!
