EARLY WEEKEND BOXOFFICE: “Identity Thief” Tries To Snatch Win From “Snitch”

SNITCH (Summit/Lionsgate) held fairly well on Saturday, with a 40% bump, and as a result, the weekend race between it and IDENTITY THIEF (Universal) is currently too close to call, although preliminary numbers at Deadline have Identity Thief pulling out a narrow victory, $13.4M to $13.2M.  That result will likely hold, since those early estimates, as it is, have Identity Thief falling much more steeply on Sunday than Snitch for no clear reason, but we may not know the final result until official numbers are in on Monday. DARK SKIES (Dimension/Weinstein) rose only 15% on Saturday, for a $8-9M weekend that should make Keri Russell happy she has a steady job on FX.

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD (20th) toppled about 60% in its 2d weekend to $10M or so, and may not get much past $70M in the US. BEAUTIFUL CREATURES (Warners) was also down about 60% to $3M.   SAFE HAVEN (Relativity) fell about 50% to $11M, an OK result that should have its final total just behind Die Hard domestically when all is said and done.  ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH (Weinstein) slipped a mere 35%, thanks to parents hungry for anything they can see with the kids.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (Weinstein), which had a splendid Saturday at the Independent Spirit Awards, with wins for Best Picture, Actress, Director and Screenplay, leads the Oscar nominees with close to $6M for the weekend, barely down from last week.
