Based on Friday’s grosses, weekend #19 of 2015 looks like a wobbly $117 million for the top 12 films Friday-Sunday, well below the norm for this weekend.
Opening at 3,003 theaters Friday, Hot Pursuit from Warner Brothers is on track for a $12.9 million opening three-day weekend (below our $17.5 million ShowBuzzDaily forecast earlier this week). The film is pacing toward a sluggish $4,300 per theater for the weekend (compared to the $5,333 opening weekend average for all wide-release films the last two years). Critical sentiment at RottenTomatoes is harsh (6% positive overall and 3% positive with top critics). Hot Pursuit is headed for $28 million total domestic.
The D Train from IFC opened at 1,009 theaters and is headed for a disastrous opening weekend of less than half a million dollars, averaging less than $500 per theater for the weekend.
