On Tuesday, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES added $17.8M to its Wayne Manor-sized vault, giving it a total of $198M in 5 days of release. It was the only movie in the Top 10 to decline yesterday, but that’s typical for the previous weekend’s big opening. It has the #5 5-day total of all time, substantially behind The Avengers’ $244M, but within $6M of #2-4.
The promising news for Warners was that Rises was down only 8% from Monday, so while its Tuesday-vs-Tuesday number was below The Dark Knight‘s $20.9M first Tuesday, and its $198M total is below Dark Knight‘s 5-day total of $203.8M, the new film has a slower rate of decline–Dark Knight was down 15% on its parallel day. That suggests Rises could be in a position to recoup its lost ground over the next week. (It also suggests that barring more bad news, the aftereffects of the Colorado shootings may have passed.) The mark for today would be Dark Knight‘s 12% drop on its first Wednesday.
