Perhaps the worst-kept secret in recent network history is one no longer, as NBC officially announced today that it will be fellow former Saturday Night Live Weekend Update host Seth Meyers who will take over from Jimmy Fallon at LATE NIGHT when the latter ascends to the deck of the Tonight Show. Meyers will reportedly stay with SNL at least part of next fall, with the transitions of Fallon and Meyers to their new posts expected to take place after the Winter Olympics in February 2014. NBC will no doubt make all of this part of the network’s Upfront presentation tomorrow.
Lorne Michaels will now be the producer of virtually all NBC’s post-primetime programming, since he’ll be part of the Fallon Tonight Show while keeping his posts at Late Night and, of course, SNL. It makes him, without any serious competition, the most powerful figure at NBC, and arguably in all of network television.
