Based on Friday’s and Saturday’s grosses, weekend #50 of 2014 now looks like $78 million for the top 12 films Friday-Sunday, a touch better than yesterday’s estimate ($76 million) but still down sharply from the norm for this weekend (down 39% from $127 million) and down 45% from the same weekend last year.
Opening at 3,503 theaters, Exodus: Gods and Kings from 20th Century Fox grossed $8.6 million Friday and $9.2 million Saturday, now on track for a $24.5 million opening three-day weekend (somewhat below our $28.5 million ShowBuzzDaily forecast earlier this week). The film is pacing toward $7,000 per theater for the weekend (compared to the $5,333 opening weekend average for all wide-release films the last two years). Critical sentiment is not supportive (28% positive overall and 24% positive with top critics). Exodus is headed for $103 million total domestic.
Opening at 979 theaters, Top Five from Paramount grossed $2.5 million Friday and $2.9 million Saturday, now on track for a $7.2 million opening three-day weekend (below our $10.5 million forecast). The film is pacing toward $7,400 per theater for the weekend. Critical sentiment is very strong (89% positive overall and 93% positive with top critics). Top Five is headed for $66 million total domestic after a fairly long run.
