Weekend Studio Estimates 9.26-28.2014

Based on Friday’s and Saturday’s grosses, weekend #39 of 2014 looks like $99 million for the top 12 films Friday-Sunday, 5% above the norm for this weekend ($95 million) and just a shade under yesterday’s estimate ($100 million).

Opening at 3,236 theaters, The Equalizer from Sony grossed $12.6 million Friday and $13.6 million Saturday, now on track for a $35.0 million opening three-day weekend (very close to our $34.5 million ShowbuzzDaily forecast). The film is pacing toward a solid $10,800 per theater for the weekend (compared to the $5,333 opening weekend average for all wide-release films the last two years). Critical sentiment is only somewhat positive (58% positive overall and 58% positive with top critics). The Equalizer is headed for $103 million total domestic.

Opening at 3,464 theaters, The Boxtrolls  from Universal/Focus grossed $4.9 million Friday and $7.5 million Saturday, now on track for a $17.3 million opening three-day weekend (somewhat above our $15.5 million forecast). The film is pacing toward a tepid $4,900 per theater for the weekend. Critical sentiment, however, is fairly positive (71% positive overall and 66% positive with top critics). The Boxtrolls is headed for $75 million total domestic.

The Maze Runner is headed for $17.5 million this weekend (down 46% from last weekend and slightly above our $16.3 million forecast). The total domestic outlook for Maze Runner has been adjusted up to $99 million. This Is Where I Leave You is headed for $7.0 million this weekend (down 39% from last weekend and a touch above our $6.5 million forecast). The total domestic outlook for This Is Where I Leave You is $39 million.  Dolphin Tale 2 is headed for $4.8 million this weekend (down 45% from last weekend and a touch below our $5.1 million forecast). The total domestic outlook for Dolphin Tale 2 has been adjusted to $46 million.
