The boxoffice news stayed bright on Saturday, according to early numbers at Deadline. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA (Sony), with its expected Saturday matinee bump, reached $30M in just its first 2 days of release, and will become the biggest September opening ever (easily beating Sweet Home Alabama‘s $35.6M) on Sunday, as well as being one of the biggest fall animated openings ever. LOOPER (TriStar/Sony/FilmDistrict) held very well with a 30% Saturday increase, and should get to $21M or so for the weekend. PITCH PERFECT (Universal) was a bit more front loaded, with about a 23% Saturday bump, but should still reach $5M in only 335 theatres. There was no reprieve, though, for NEVER BACK DOWN (20th), which won’t even earn $3M in over 2500 theatres.
Holdovers remained on track, with END OF WATCH (Open Road), TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE (Warners) and HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET (Relativity) all headed for $7.5-8M in their 2nd weekends, down around 40% each.
