The Saturday boxoffice news was better for some titles than others. According to preliminary numbers at Deadline, TAKEN 2 (20th) held about even on Saturday, which is reasonable for an action-movie sequel. Recent comparisons: The Bourne Legacy had a 4% bump on its 2d day of release, while The Expendables 2 dropped 3%. If Sunday holds, the Liam Neeson vehicle has a chance of hitting $50M for the weekend.
PITCH PERFECT (Universal) had a very solid Saturday, up about 25% from Friday, and could reach $15M for the weekend.
Although FRANKENWEENIE (Disney) had the best Saturday bump of the openings at about 55%, that’s not very impressive by family-movie standards (by comparison, last week Hotel Transylvania went up 73% on its first Saturday). It’s headed for a dismal $12M start, and will need significant overperformance overseas to have any chance of breaking even.
Holdovers were consistent with their Friday performances: HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA (Sony) held beautifully despite the arrival of the Frankenweenie competition, down 35-40%, and LOOPER (TriStar/Sony/FilmDistrict) was also firm in the face of Taken 2, down 40-45%. END OF WATCH (Open Road), TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE (Warners), HOUSE AT THE END OF THE STREET (Relativity) and THE MASTER (Weinstein) were all fairly steady.

The weekend predictions will return next week, when Exodus: God and Kings and Top Five are released nationally. This weekend, typical for the post-Thanksgiving weekend, is extremely quiet. Only The Pyramid is opening at a very small 589 theaters.
