EARLY WEEKEND BOXOFFICE: “Evil Dead” Casts Its Spell

Early Saturday boxoffice numbers at Deadline show no great surprises for the weekend’s offerings.  Any hope that EVIL DEAD (TriStar/Sony/FilmDistrict) would have the staying power of a Mama faded with the demon-filled gorefest’s 24% Saturday drop (although it should be noted that Saturdays in general will start looking lower with studios now treating “Friday” as a nearly 30-hour period that starts on Thursday night).  Evil Dead should still easily win the weekend with around $25M.  The much more family-oriented JURASSIC PARK 3D (Universal) had a small 7% Saturday bump to $7.5M, with a sub-$20M weekend likely.

GI JOE: RETALIATION (Paramount/MGM) is headed for a standard 50% drop in its second weekend to about $20M, enough to keep it going while hoping for much stronger results overseas.  TEMPTATION (Lionsgate) and THE HOST (Open Road) should fall a bit more sharply than 50%, based on their front-loaded demos.

THE CROODS (DreamWorks Animation/20th) continues to hold well, with only a 25% drop in Weekend 3, and OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (FilmDistrict) is showing unexpected strength, down only around 30%.  OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL (Disney) should only drop a bit more than that, but with its massive cost it still needs overseas help if it’s to do more than break even.
