Preliminary numbers at Deadline have IRON MAN 3 (Disney) dropping just 6% on Saturday to $64M. If that number holds, it’s quite a good hold for a blockbuster of this magnitude–in comparison, The Avengers fell 14% on its second day, and Iron Man 2 went down 11%. (The original Iron Man actually rose 6% on its first Saturday, but that was at a different boxoffice level, with “only” a $35.2M opening day.) The $64M figure would also give Iron 3 the 2d biggest Saturday ever, behind only Avengers‘ $69.6M.
Depending on whether Iron 3 more closely follows Avengers (which fell only 18% on its 3rd day of release) or Iron Man 2 (which dropped 32%), it should be heading for no worse than a $170M weekend, and more likely $175-180M. Any of those will make it the #2 opening weekend ever in the US, behind the $207.4M Avengers juggernaut. (All of this, of course, is in addition to its gigantic overseas boxoffice, which was $388M as of Friday.) At this point, the only real question seems to be whether Iron 3 will make it into the worldwide $1B club.
