FULL WEEK BOX OFFICE ACTUALS & YEAR TO DATE July 11-17

The past week (seven days ending Sunday) came in up 25% versus last year’s comparable week (the first significant increase in five weeks).  Year-to-date box office is now down 7% versus last year.   

The Past Week: Total Box Office Volume
All films in wide release playing between July 11 and July 17 grossed $331 million, up 25% versus the same week in 2010 and up 17% from the average comparable week the past four years.  Year to date, all films are down 7% from the same period last year (down from -9% last week), and all films year-to-date are flat versus the comparable year-to-date number averaged over the last four years.

Weekend Actuals vs Sunday’s Studio Projections

The weekend Studio Projections (Friday and Saturday actual numbers with estimates for Sunday’s box office) for virtually every movie were surprisingly predictive of the actual weekend figures out today.
