Saturday was a little weaker than expected, according to preliminary boxoffice figures reported by
Deadline, resulting in some shortfalls compared to initial weekend estimates.
21 JUMP STREET (Sony) had a small Saturday decline of about 5%, which should get it to around $34M for the weekend. The novelty of Will Ferrell speaking Spanish in
CASA DI MI PADRE (Pantelion/Lionsgate) was shorter-lived, and the picture is headed for a 10% Saturday drop and a $1.9M weekend total.
If the numbers hold, the most surprising result will be a relatively small (for a family movie) Saturday bump of only 25-30% for THE LORAX (Universal), which would give it $21-22M for the weekend, still good enough for 2d place but several million lower than the initial weekend estimate. JOHN CARTER (Disney) is headed for the expected 55% drop to $13M, with A THOUSAND WORDS (Paramount) holding better but at only $3.5M for the weekend, while the bottom dropped out of SILENT HOUSE (Open Road), with as much as a 70% drop from last week.
