THE SKED 2013 UPFRONTS: ABC Trailer – “Betrayal”

BETRAYAL will be the latest inhabitant of ABC’s Sunday 10PM soap hour, trying to outdo such recent occupants as GCB, Red Widow, 666 Park Avenue and Pan Am.  It stars Hannah Ware as the wife of a prosecutor who discovers too late that the man she’s having an affair with is the defense attorney opposing her husband on a huge case.

The Betrayal trailer doesn’t do any more than lay out the show’s premise–at the very end, Ware’s character has just discovered who her lover is–so it’s hard to tell just where the show intends to go.  The one conclusion that seems clear is that this is one very soapy soap, all lush perfume-commercial visuals and romantic music.  If the show intends to feature the kind of heavily plotted twists of Revenge or Scandal, they’re not evident here (although clearly James Cromwell is up to no good), and if it’s just the story of One Woman’s Heartbreak, ABC can write off a lot of potential audience.  Unless there turns out to be some grittier substance beneath the suds, Betrayal may quickly join the parade of ABC’s Sunday exits.
