THE SKED 2013 UPFRONTS: ABC Trailer – “Lucky 7”

ABC wraps up its all-new Tuesday night with LUCKY 7, a wish-fulfillment (and probably a “be careful what you wish for”) drama about a group of 7 blue-collar workers at a Queens gas station who hit the lottery for $45M.  It’s set to air against Chicago Fire on NBC and whatever CBS is planning for the hour.

The Lucky 7 trailer lays out the show’s basic situation, with some indication of the storylines and characters we’ll be following.  One of the co-workers decided not to play the lottery with the rest and now is being left behind by his friends, another is part of a young couple with a baby, one has been in trouble with loansharks and was robbing the station, etc.  No doubt the series itself will play out the thrill of sudden wealth (we see one character choosing among diamonds) with the challenges that ensue.  A show like this depends more on good writing and plotting than a genre show, an ordinary soap or a procedural, because it can really go anywhere, so at this point Lucky 7 is hard to judge.  It has a grabby, potentially appealing premise, and the competition (at least on NBC) is none too fearsome, so while other shows built around lottery winners (Windfall comes to mind) haven’t worked, this one might be more fortunate.
