A newsmagazine took the crown on a mostly down night.
NBC: There must have been some reason why DATELINE zoomed 0.6 from last week, increasing its rating by more than 50% and topping the night with a 1.7. Whatever it was, the show should consider trying it again. The evening started with a decent 1.5 for a rerun of the SNL XMAS SPECIAL.
ABC: Both LAST MAN STANDING and MALIBU COUNTRY had 1.4s, down 0.2 and 0.1 from last week. The rerun SHARK TANK did better with 1.5, winning the 9PM hour, and then at 10PM, 20/20 was hit by the Dateline assault and fell 0.4 to 1.3.
CBS: The line-up was moderately down: 0.2 for UNDERCOVER BOSS, which had a 1.6 and still won the 8PM hour, and 0.1 for CSI NY and BLUE BLOODS, both at 1.4.
FOX: After KITCHEN NIGHTMARES climbed slightly to 1.2, FRINGE continued its creaking way to the interdimensional grave, holding steady at 0.9.
CW: NIKITA held its 0.4 from last week, which is better than it had done at 9PM. In that slot, a rerun ARROW had a 0.2.
Now that college football is over until the bowls begin, the Saturday night schedule is a hodgepodge: UFC MMA on FOX, the children’s movie The Borrowers on ABC, Christmas specials on CBS, and the AMERICAN GIVING AWARDS on NBC. The night’s major ratings event is likely to be SNL in latenight, hosted by Jamie Foxx (starting his publicity rounds for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained), with musical guest Ne-Yo. Sunday features the season finale of THE AMAZING RACE on CBS and the Hallmark Hall of Fame production CHRISTMAS WITH HOLLY on ABC–but for some millions of us, it will all be about finding out if HOMELAND can regain its course after what seemed like a disastrous misstep last week.
