The Past Week: Total Box Office Volume

All films in wide release playing between August 13 and August 19 grossed a decent $196 million, up 7% from the four-year average for the comparable week and up 3% from the same week in 2011. Year to date (now over $6.8 billion for wide-release films) is now running 5% ahead of last year.

Weekend Actuals versus Studio Estimate

The major films this weekend (the top seven with weekends greater than $10 million) came in with actual weekend grosses within 1% of the studio estimates in all but two cases.  The opening weekend number for The Expendables 2 ended up at $28,591,370 officially, down 0.6% from the studio estimate Sunday morning.    

The Bourne Legacy came in with $17,057,385, up 0.2% from the Universal estimate Sunday morning, while ParaNorman opened with $14,087,050 officially, up 0.6% from the Focus (Universal) estimate.  The Dark Knight Rises grossed an official $11,011,349 in its fifth weekend, down 1.2% from the Warner Brothers estimate.  Finally, The Odd Life of Timothy Green opened with $10,822,903, down 0.8% from the Disney estimate.

The only films to significantly miss their studio estimate were Sparkle at $11,643,342 (down 3.0%) and The Campaign $13,127,289 (down 1.9%).
