SHOWBUZZDAILY EARLY WEEKEND BOXOFFICE REPORT – 7/14/12

ICE AGE:  CONTINENTAL DRIFT (20th) continued with its underwhelming opening on Saturday, according to preliminary numbers at Deadline.   The 4th in the animated series had no Saturday matinee bump, holding at $16.5M for a 2d consecutive day (the previous Friday openings in the series had gone up 43% and 28% on their 2d days), on its way to around a $45M opening weekend.  That’s only about 2/3 of Ice Age 2‘s start, and barely above the Friday-Saturday-Sunday of Ice Age 3, which had opened on the preceding Wednesday.

With no new adult product in the market, the weekend falls for holdovers were fairly soft, around 45%.  That was the decline for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (Sony), down to $35M, and SAVAGES (Universal) held even better, down just 42% to $9M.  Only MADAGASCAR 3 (DreamWorks Animation/Paramount), directly in Ice Age 4‘s line of fire, fell more than 50%.  The best hold belonged to MOONRISE KINGDOM (Focus/Universal), down only around 25% from last weekend.
