Ratings analysis and comparisons follow the chart.
ABC: The preliminary rating for THE OSCARS was 6.4, down 26% from last year’s preliminary 8.7. That number adjusted up to 9.1, and last night will probably have a similar adjustment, but this will undoubtedly be one of the lowest-rated Academy Awards ever. (There was a stretch of low-rated awards in the 1990s, so the all-time ranking is unclear for now.) Some additional historical information: The fast nationals for the OSCARS OPENING CEREMONY red carpet show time period was 4.0 last night. Last year (5.2 P18-49 rating from 7:00-8:30 pm ET) declined -31% to a 3.6 P18-49 official program rating, as west coast viewing of the 10 pm ET hour (at 7 pm PT) was moved to the Oscars rating. THE OSCARS Ratings Past Five Years (official live+same day ratings) P18-49 rating: 9.1 (2017), 10.5 (2016), 11.0 (2015), 13.1 (2014), 13.0 (2013). P2+ millions: 33.0 (2017), 34.5 (2016), 37.3 (2015), 43.6 (2014), 40.4 (2013)
CBS: The other networks aired original programming only in the 7PM hour. 60 MINUTES was steady at 0.8, followed by a trio of 0.4 reruns.
NBC: After a special DATELINE at 0.6, the movie FURIOUS 7 was also at 0.6.
FOX: The night started with 0.5 for BILLY GRAHAM: AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY, then went on to reruns at 0.4-0.5.
With AMERICAN IDOL around the corner, ABC clears its shelves of THE BACHELOR over the next 2 days, including 3 hours of the show tonight.
COMPARISONS TO SIMILAR NIGHTS: Preliminary adult 18-49 ratings versus the same night last year and same night last week.
