SHOWBUZZDAILY EARLY WEEKEND BOXOFFICE REPORT – 6/16/12

Nothing much changed at the boxoffice between Friday and Saturday, and that was bad news for the weekend’s openings. According to preliminary numbers at Deadline, neither ROCK OF AGES (Warners) nor THAT’S MY BOY (Sony) had more than the most negligible Saturday bump, so unless one or both benefits appreciably from Father’s Day on Sunday (particularly unlikely for the R-rated That’s My Boy), Rock is headed for a $15M weekend and Boy for around $13M.  This means that neither movie is likely even to earn out the cost of its marketing campaign in the US, resulting in multi-million dollar writedowns for their respective studios.  Happy Father’s Day, guys!

MADAGASCAR 3 (DreamWorks/Paramount) is likely to have a strong holiday Sunday, giving it a $35M 2d weekend, down only around 40% from its opening.  PROMETHEUS (20th), though, will probably fall 60% from its opening to a $20M Weekend 2.  Both movies will face direct competition as of Friday, when Brave and Abraham Lincoln:  Vampire Hunter enter the market, so these could be their last hurrahs.

The rest of the holdovers should be in line with their Friday numbers:  SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN (Universal) down around 45%, MEN IN BLACK 3 (Sony) 40%, THE AVENGERS (Disney) and THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (Fox Searchlight) about 30% each.  MOONRISE KINGDOM (Focus/Universal) remains on target for a per-theatre average of about $12K in 178 theatres.
